Eating More Vegetables Equals a Healthier You

by Jo Ettles

We are all encouraged to eat between five and nine servings of fruits and vegetables each and every day. Initially, that may seem like a lot, but it is actually much easier than you think to fit that many servings of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet. Our grocery stores are bursting with beautiful fresh delicious fruits and vegetables. Fuits and vegetables are nutrient rich and are vital for health, wellness, weightloss and anti ageing. With so many varieties of fruits and vegetables to choose from, it is very easy to make these nutritious, delicious foods part of your daily meals and snacks.

When you take into account how much a serving really is, it is actually easy to get five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day. If you think about it, you could add a cup of vegetables to an omelette at breakfast. At morning tea, you could consume another piece of fruit rather than an unhealthy snack. At lunch you could consume a beautiful salad and consider three cups of raw vegetables to make up your salad. At dinner, you could include three cups of delicious steamed or chargrilled vegetables with a good quality protein and follow your evening meal with another piece of fruit. Add that up and you have achieved nine serves of fruit and veg! It may seem like a lot, but you can even include fruits and vegetables as snacks, as garnishes, as side dishes and as meals.

See how easy it really is to reach this daily goal?
Eating the same foods day in and day out quickly becomes boring, so why not pick a variety of fruits and vegetables, in every beautiful colour of the rainbow and in every conceivable shape, size and texture, to give yourself a varied diet every day. You will be guaranteed a wide variety of nutrients, vitamins and delicious flavours.

When shopping for fruits and vegetables, it is important to choose a variety of different colours. Different coloured fruits and vegetables have different types of nutrients depending on the colour and choosing a variety of colours will help ensure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need each each and every day.
Everyone likes to try out new recipes so be sure to create recipes that can combine both fruit and vegetables together. Think chicken and apple salad and you are achieving a healthy yet tasty combination. Trying new recipe, incorporating fruits and vegetables that you have never tried really is a positive way to add new favourites to your meal plan while getting the best nutrition available.

Many people mistakenly think that they do not need to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day if they just take a vitamin supplement. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. That is because fruits and vegetables contain far more than the micronutrients identified by science and synthesized in vitamin pills. While these micronutrients like vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E are important to good health, so too are the hundreds of other elements that are contained in healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. These elements are not always available in a pill form, they must be ingested through a healthy, balanced diet. In addition to this, fruits and vegetables are much less costly than vitamin pills.

Try and always purchase fruits and vegetables that are in season and grown locally. It is worth the effort to eat more fruit and vegetables every day.Enjoy the enormous benefits of healthy eating. It's the key to wellness, weightloss and anti ageing.
