Coffee for Everyone

In technical terms, Coffee is defined as '' a brewed beverage with a distinct aroma and flavour prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffea plant''. Our ancestors made this phenomenal discovery in the early fifteenth century in Yemen. It traces its trajectory from being roasted and prepared in the shrines to being one of the most consumed beverages today.

For most of us, our day does not start without a cup of it. It helps awaken our senses and gain momentum for all the tasks waiting ahead. It fuses optimism and enthusiasm in our minds to tackle a long, loaded and hectic impending day. It helps chart out a mental plan while one sips indulgently. Coffee lovers snuggle up with a good book and a cup of their favorite coffee on a chilly winter afternoon or refresh themselves with a tall glass of cold coffee on a blazing summer evening.

Coffee is also a great stimulant and a mode of mood enlightenment for many people, owing to its caffeine content. On the professional front, writers use it to extract creativity out of their minds, businessmen use it as a stress buster as they spend their days (and nights) chasing targets, artists use it to relax while they chalk out an intricate portrait and employees use it as a force to assist them in meeting their deadlines. It is a drink enjoyed by people of all age groups and classes.

Also it is pertinent to recognize the role that coffeehouses play in the development of the political associations worldwide. Leaders have found it conducive to sit and discuss grave issues over the brown concoction. Talking about this, lately the literal 'standing up' for one's rights has been replaced by 'sitting down' and discussing issues. There is awareness in the minds of people and eagerness in their hearts to talk about everything. This generation cannot be fooled. Every subject ranging from current affairs to Bollywood is dissected and anatomized by everyone. And what is the place to hold such gatherings? Ninety per cent of the times it is a coffee shop.

Its contribution in the love lives of people cannot be erased from the argument. The usual first meetings of the lovers over ''coffee'' help build a relationship and turn it into serious love affairs. The confession of love is made, desserts ordered and hearts won. The sweet and innocent 'first date' over coffee is remembered by the couple and the coffee shop becomes a legendary proof of their love. Not only this, qualms are sorted, friends made, arguments cleared and intimacies developed - all over a simple, basic cup of coffee. Variety is the spice of life and the same theory holds good for coffee. Different flavors have been developed to suit the tastes of one and all. The basic Cappuccino tops the list. Then there is Latte (a creamier version), Mocha (a slightly stronger version with less of milk), Espresso (black coffee), Irish coffee (with alcohol content),
Frappe (cold coffee). Not only this, the raw coffee is subjected to an interesting experimentation with ingredients such as ice-cream, chocolates, fruits and nuts. Is that not another reason to ''wake up and smell the coffee''? Studies have shown that drinking coffee reduces the risk of prostate cancer, Alzheimer's disease, heart diseases and gout.

With no offence to tea lovers, I quote Jackie Chan who states '' coffee is a language in itself''. Coffee really has a charm of its own- one that cannot be ignored. Perhaps that is why 29 September is celebrated as the ''national coffee day'' in the United States. After all, a lot can happen over coffee!
